Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who worked as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to take on jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a magazine about crime and drama, however no theater jobs were forthcoming. She then worked as a hat check girl at the nightclub before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. In Boston, in which she was employed during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and during the day as an usherette. She earned a bachelor's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
